9791 1961-10-28 Southall
View eastward, towards Brentford (to the right), Paddington (top right); junction of branch from Brentford. 9761 is shunting the shed with empty loco coal wagons and a bogie well wagon to be taken away. A spare single car DMU stands in the depot headshunt.
Peter Kerslake adds "On what looks to be a sunny and crisp October day this fine view at Southall includes an immaculate "Castle" apparently according to the note already on site heading westwards away from Paddington but with a Reporting Number for an express heading towards the Capital rather than away from it.
The "Castle" is probably a returning
working to Worcester and Hereford from the morning's "Cathedrals Express", the 7:45 a.m from Hereford to Paddington as Reporting Number "A22" is appropriate to that working, and if this is a down working then the morning's Reporting Number has been left on in error by the "Castle's" fireman.
In that case this would be a Worcester based engine, that shed also keeping its Top Link "Castles" in tip top condition.
The footbridge is possibly the one favoured by the young enthusiasts in the days of steam , a meeting place for those who later bought 1466 and formed the fledgling Great Western Society , part of the bridge now being at the Society's base at Didcot .
