This photograph from 3rd. June , 1962 is of particular interest as it shows that a sparklingly clean 6002 , " King William IV " appears to have received at least a partial repaint , mainly to its front end during its overhaul here at Swindon , just three months before it was withdrawn in that September , the month when no less than seven other " Kings " were condemned.
The thinking behind this late overhaul has never really been satisfactorily explained , although differing rumours were circulating at that period in time as to which members of the class might possibly be kept in store for eventual preservation , although , in the event , 6002 was sadly not so selected and it was sold during late January , 1963 for cutting up to Cox and Danks at Langley Green .
