9707 1954 London Paddington
A good shot on a nice sunny day at Paddington with Old Oak Common's 9707 doing what it was almost always used for, namely bringing empty stock into the departure platforms side of the station from the carriage sidings out at Old Oak, ready for an outgoing working . There's a pretty formidable rake of coaches in the working, and 9707 clearly displays her target 20 number, with her condensing apparatus visible, used to enable these engines to traverse part of the underground system of London Transport's Metropolitan line with its numerous and lengthy tunnels. The coned topped water column visible above the second coach was there to provide water for these station pilot engines whilst they waited their next call to duty as in addition to bringing fresh empty stock into Paddington they would also run back out to Old Oak with empty stock from an arrival, often spending considerable periods of time between duties, frequently at the buffer stops within Paddington itself where there were no facilities to take water.
