Paddington - Perranporth/Penzance express struggling up Dainton Bank
View NW, towards Newton Abbot. On this infamous day, the 8.25am Paddington - Penzance/Perranporth was absolutely crammed with many people standing in the corridors. They may have been standing for seven hours already, for it was 3.30pm and the train was 150 minutes late, being due at Penzance at 4.40pm - and there were 110 miles with 11 stops still to go. No wonder holiday-makers went by car after that. The locomotives are the prototype Collett 'Hall' 4-6-0 No. 4900 'Saint Martin', piloting 'Castle' 4-6-0 No. 5055 'Earl of Eldon' (built 6/36 as 'Lydford Castle', renamed 8/37, withdrawn 9/64).
