4953 1949-08-13 Naas Crossing

A West of England - Birmingham Snow Hill express at Naas Crossing, near Haresfield.
View southward, towards Bristol and the West Country. (See other images here for details). The 11.15am Newquay - Birmingham Snow Hill is coming along the ex-GW tracks after Standish Junction, because it will take the Gloucester-avoiding line. It is headed by Collett 4-6-0 No. 4953 'Pitchford Hall'. This engine has survived to 2012 preserved at Tyseley Locomotive Works, being one of the survivors of countless identical locomotives withdrawn in the early 1960s: it was built in 8/29 and withdrawn from normal service in 5/63. Note the ex-GW lower-quadrant signals, which show that another Up express is coming right behind on the ex-Midland line.
