7927 1958-05-23 London Paddington
View NW on Platform 2/3, with 'Castle' No. 5001 'Llandovery Castle' leaving from Platform 4 on the 18.00 express to Weymouth, while 'Modified Hall' No. 7927 'Willington Hall' backs down onto a train at Platform 3. On the left the empty stock of another train is running into Platform 5. The 'Castle' was already 32 years old and lasted another five years, but the Modified 'Hall' was a 'youngster' built in 10/50 and withdrawn in 12/65.
Peter Kerslake adds "The splendid light in this very fine shot here at Paddington is thanks to it being 6 .p.m. , just right for recording departures but not so good for arrivals!
5001 "Llandovery Castle" was allocated to Cardiff Canton at the date of this image , but was moved to Shrewsbury early the following year, later going to Old Oak Common in August of 1960 from where it was condemned in February 1963.
7927 "Willington Hall" was a Reading engine at this date".
