5955 1964-08-16 Swindon

Believed to be on the occasion of the Warwickshire Railway Society’s Swindon & Eastleigh Railtour. With D6915 also on shed.

In the penultimate year of steam on the Western Region 5955 " Garth Hall " still retains her number and name plates in this fine view from Swindon's Running Shed with another " Hall " visible behind .
Allocated in past years to Landore , 5955 bears a " 1M69" chalked Reporting Number indicting a recent working on the Birmingham and Shrewsbury line and my records show that the engine ended its days allocated to Bristol Barrow Road.
Swindon shed's roof has seen better days in these late days of its remaining open to steam .
5955 " Garth Hall " was photographed by myself being towed as a " dead " engine through Gloucester Central station by 3864 on 21st . June , 1965 on its way to the Risca scrapyards in South Wales in company with 44135 and 4992 " Crosby Hall " , all three locomotives having been withdrawn from , and stored at Barrow Road some while previously.

I am advised that 1M69 was a relief working and not shown in the Summer 1964 WTT.
The chalked number refers to its working 8 days earlier on 8 August 1964 the 1M69 1110 Bristol -Manchester relief. She was photograped on this service at bristol with this distinctive chalked headcode.
