6943 1964-03-24 Horton Road

A sad 6943 , " Farnley Hall " , a Cardiff Canton engine in happier times , seen here at Gloucester's Horton Road M.P.D. in the penultimate year for Western steam , with all means of identification missing , without connecting rods and clearly withdrawn and heading for a breaker's yard .
Gloucester saw many such condemned locomotives in the years preceding the end of W.R. steam as they were stabled both at Horton Road and the abandoned Barnwood Depots whilst on their way to the Welsh scrapyards .
Those still in operational service , specially working on freights to and back from South Wales whilst Severn Tunnel Junction Depot was still open to steam , were also in a similarly run down condition during their final months.
