4928 1959-06-27 Dawlish
Pictured at at 2.33pm piloting 4926 on an Up express.
The joys of Summertime here at Dawlish before the days of Continental Holidays , and a most unusually double headed working, not often seen this side of Newton Abbot, but I bet it's packed to capacity, with a formidable train behind these two " Halls " most likely heading Northwards back home to the Midlands judging by the mixed array of coaches. It's probably come up from Cornwall, with an additional load being taken on from the Torquay line at Newton Abbot as was customary, 4928 , " Gatacre Hall " was shown in my book as earlier being a Swindon engine, and is probably working through to Bristol together with its train engine.
Kennaway Tunnel, the last of the five short tunnels here along the sea wall as one heads Eastwards towards Exeter, is in the background, and just look at the number of holidaymakers enjoying the sights in the days when this area was so popular, with a wonderful array of cars parked on Marine Parade in front of the guest houses and hotels.
Happy Days!
