4999 1959 Patchway

I think that whoever has chalked the " 264 " Reporting Number on to 4999 was determined to get his message across to the signalmen , but I don't admire his artistic skills too much , however , but he's done his best ! " Gopsal Hall " from Bristol St. Philip's Marsh , is climbing up from Wales and the Severn tunnel towards Bristol where the " down " line seen on the far left is clearly on the higher level here at Patchway . This " down " line is on the site of the original 1863 single line to and from the Severn Tunnel but with its severe gradients it later became necessary to lay the line nearest the camera so as to allow locomotives a more gradual one in one hundred climb eastwards from the tunnel than the original single track had earlier provided. Just visible on the extreme right is a" dead end " refuge siding , running out on to the main line just before Patchway station.
