5967 1950s Aller Junction

5967 1950s Aller Junction

A Hall as train engine here at Aller Junction , and running down to Newton Abbot from Dainton Bank. 5967 Bickmarsh Hall has assisted one of her sisters as pilot over the South Devon banks from Plymouth, and what a mixed load there is, with a milk tank leading the formation , in addition, most unusually for this working , some passenger stock, and I think this is the invariably very heavily loaded afternoon Express Parcels from Plymouth Millbay, but 5967 has the wrong headlamp code as this isn't a local stopping service !
While the lines are now (from left to right) Down Torbay, Up Torbay, Down Main & Up Main, when this photograph was taken, long before the 1980's Exeter resignalling, at this point the lines were Down Relief, Down Main, Up Relief & Up Main. The junction was directly in front of the signal box. The odd pairing, i.e. not having both the reliefs outside of the mains, was sensible for the short distance between Aller Junction and Newton Abbot.
