6984 1965 Gloucester Central

6984 1965 Gloucester Central

6984 , minus its " Owsden Hall " nameplates and a Hereford based engine in times past has had to restart this freight here at Gloucester Central , having been halted by an adverse signal at 1.20.p.m. on 19th. of May , 1956 on the bridge at its approach from South Wales with an eastbound freight .
Freight workings on the South Wales line at this period of time were in the hands of a variety of Midland , Western and Standard classes but it all ended at the end of 1965 .

I wasn't to know it at the time that I took this picture at Gloucester , but 6984 " Owsden Hall " , a Hereford based engine in its earlier years , was destined to escape from being cut up following withdrawal in 1966 ,the year after my photograph.
Twenty years later it was moved from Dai Woodham's at Barry to Bicester from where it later to go to the Severn Valley Railway , the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway and finally back to the Swindon and Cricklade Railway where final restoration is presently underway.
