Elderly ex-GWR Pannier 0-6-0T by Severn Estuary near Awre Junctionbr/ View NE at Gatcombe, towards Awre and Gloucester on the original GWR South Wales main line via Gloucester, which has long picturesque stretches by the Severn Estuary. [Ahead is a promontory which must have been east of Hagloe or of Awre, but seems rather too elevated. The engine tootling along is Dean '2021' class No. 2039 (built 2/1898 as a saddle-tank, rebuilt with pannier tanks 4/18, withdrawn 4/50).br/ br/As is correctly shown , Awre is on the Welsh side of the Severn , seen here on the right , between Gloucester and Lydney , on the former G.W.R. line down to Chepstow and beyond , and 2039 is heading down towards Lydney in this view , with Awre being the junction for the G.W.R. line to Blakeney and Cinderford , part of which was run on joint Great Western and Midland Railway lines as it progressed into the depths of the Forest of Dean.br/ This main line was an essential alternative route for workings between South Wales and the Midlands , London and elsewhere especially on Sundays when track work was taking place within the Severn tunnel , such diverted workings running via Gloucester , the only alternative route after the destruction of the Severn rail bridge on the 25th of October 1960
