Even in the 1890s the passenger locomotives of the Furness Railway had a decidedly archaic look about them. I hope this superb portrait of 2-4-0 No. 1 at Carnforth proves my point!
It had been built by Sharp, Stewart & Co. in 1870 and was finally withdrawn in 1916.
