Aimed at attracting tourists, the CIE's 'Radio Train' featured an on board DJ Lorcan O'Tresaigh (1927-2006) who hosted the broadcast using a Tannoy system. He would take requests and interview passengers during the journey. The 'Radio Train' operated from 1954 to 1979 and is seen in June 1954 at Mallow in Co.Cork. The locomotive in charge is an ex-Great Southern & Western Rly. E.A.Watson 'B2' class 4-6-0 No. 402. It had ben built at Inchicore circa 1916 as a 4-cyl. engine but was converted to 2-cyl. propulsion in the late 1920s and was withdrawn by 1964.
