The mortal rermains of No 71000 Duke of Gloucester at Crewe Works in the company of A4 No 60026 Miles Beavor in 1967.

Peter Kerslake says Stripped of its two sets of valve gear , its fate uncertain and preservation attempts having failed.It had spent two years out of service at Crewe North depot following its withdrawal in 1962, followed by three years at Crewe Works.
1967 saw 71000 being sent in error to Cashmores at Newport but the mistake was spotted just in time to avoid it meeting its end there and it was quickly moved to Woodhams at Barry where it should have gone in the first place and from where it was eventually saved.
'A4' 60026 'Miles Beevor' on the left was awaiting removal of its driving wheels which were to find a new home on the preserved 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley.
