Poor old 2211 looks to be nearing the end of her days here at Banbury Depot in 1964 , minus her cabside and front numberplates with what looks like an empty tender . She was withdrawn in the Week ending 14th November 1964.
Banbury had held seven of the "2251 " class on its allocation in the mid ' fifties and 2211 had entered service in 1940 , the first of the batch of ten built at Swindon that year.
By a quirk of numbering Swindon had allocated numbers 2200 , and 2251 to 2299 to those members of the class built between 1930 and 1938 and it was not until 1939 that 2201 entered service , with 2250 following as the last of the "22" series in 1945 so the oldest members had the highest numbers with the newer ones having the lowest series.
Banbury had seventy locomotives there in the ' fifties , an important Depot with a vital role in the wartime years with munitions trains pasing through to the South Coast .
The Depot closed in October of 1966 following transfer to the Midland Region three years earlier
