2200 1956-06-23 Aberystwyth
Not the first of her class despite her 2200 number , as Mr. Collett's highly successful design began in 1930 when 2251 emerged from Swindon Works in 1930 , the first of her class .
Numbering was confused , as there were seemingly locomotives still in service in 1930 bearing " 22XX " numbers ,so the class began in 1930 with 2251 , and it was not until 1938 that 2200 seen here , in company with the series 2291 to 2299 came into service , followed by 2201 to 2250 being constructed between 1939 and 1945 , so the older engines had the highest numbers whilst the newest examples had the lowest , a fact which must have caused those at Swindon some confusion in the following years and which accounts for the fact that 2258 , built in 1930 , was the first to be condemned in 1958 whilst 2210 , from 1939 , lasted in service until 1965 , the last survivor .
Aberystwyth , deep in the Cambrian network , although a secondary Depot to Machynlleth, had the task of supplying motive power for services northwards to Shrewsbury in adition to those southwards down to Carmarthen.
