The first of her class which would eventually number one hundred in total , with an additional twenty of the later " 3200 " coming along later , 2251 was the first of the twenty built at Swindon in 1930 .
With a shortage of light passenger and freight locomotives capable of working branch line services Mr. Collett introduced the "2251 " class in order to replace the ageing " Dean Goods " which were nearing the end of their days , but the " 2251 " , with its larger boiler was accordingly given a yellow route restriction classification .
The class were to become useful and popular locomotives and as seen here a number worked the Cambrian system with Oswestry Depot in 1956 having two on its books .
At that time the nearby Machynlleth Depot had the largest allocation of the class , for use on the Cambrian lines , with no less than nine being found there , whilst Bristol Bath Road , Banbury , Hereford and Neyland all had seven each and representatives could be found at 26 Motive Power Depots in 1956 .
