Now deep in Somerset and Dorset country , 2219 had been an Oswestry member of the class in the mid 'fifties , working the Cambrian lines , but the introduction of Diesel units into Wales some years later saw those " 2251 " examples at Oswestry and Machynlleth being displaced fromthe Cambrian network , and 2219 could now be allocated to Bristol at the date of this view .
Bristol Bath Road had seven of the class on its books back in 1956 , sharing that number with Banbury , Hereford and Neyland but Machynlleth , with its nine , had the most at that period in time.
2219 was a wartime built member of the class , emerging from Swindon in 1940 , the class members with the lowest numbers being the later ones to be built as the class had begun in 1930 with 2251 and it was not until 1939 that 2201 entered into service .
This anomaly in the numbering arose due to older classes of G.W.R. locomotives remaining in service in 1930 retaining similar numbers , and it accounts for the fact that 2258 , built in 1930 , was the first withdrawal whilst 2210 , a 1939 example , survived until 1965
