Three Castles, a handful of 28xx's and an eight coupled tank await their fate. I visited Sharpness three times in 1964 and my records indicate that this view dates from 23rd. August of that year. Situated on the bank of the Severn , Coopers Metals at Sharpness was a smalll breakers' yard and apparently purchased more locomotives than its workforce was capable of diposing of at this time , resulting in a number being' sold on' to the larger yard at Cashmores' at Newport , such engines probably being these seen here , including the three' Castles' at the far end of the row, which are almost certainly 7009 , 7015 and 7037. Tenders were apparently disposed of before work began on the locomotives themselves , probably because they were more easier cut up.

Peter Kerslake adds " Some recent and additional information tells me that three of the engines seen in my view here from Sharpness on 23rd. August of 1964 arrived here at Coopers Metals four weeks earlier on the 20th. July , those being 4701 , 2842 and 2852 .
4701 is the fourth on the right in my photograph , ahead of " Castles " 7037 , 7009 and 7015 with the two "2800 "s immediately ahead , all facing my camera.
The engines were towed from Gloucester to Sharpness by 1445 , formerly a Hereford engine but by now one of Gloucester's last surviving " 1400 " class .
2842 had been a Newport Ebbw Vale engine in happier times , with 2852 being allocated to Swindon some ten years earlier , whilst 4701 had been a long standing resident at Old Oak Common .
Whether all these were actually cut up here at Sharpness I do not know as Coopers , a Swindon based Company , sold on a number of these locomotives to other dealers. "
