9021 1957-06 Afonwen

The Cambrian at its best with 'Dukedog' 9021 running into the Down platform at Afon Wen. This view from the station footbridge looking eastwards towards the next station at Cricceth and further eastwards to Portmadoc. The station was the meeting point of the former LNWR line from North Wales which provided a direct link for northern holidaymakes heading to Pwllheli, and further south at Aberystwyth.
Afon Wen station was a cold and exposed spot in wintertime, the platfoms and stock often being soaked by spray blowing in from Tremadoc Bay as the whole location was just above sea level with the station and its lengthy platforms. Stock and freight sidings are on the right in this view. 9021 was one of sixteen of the class allocated to Machynlleth at this time, the shed to visit if you wanted to capture a 'Dukedog' on film in its last years. 9021 when built in November 1939 had used the boiler, cab and fittings from 'Duke' class 3259 Merlin together with the frames from 'Bulldog' 3411.
