9004 1950s Welshpool

9004 1950s Welshpool

With a LMS horsebox No M42210 in the yard.

" Dukedog " 9004 had been constructed at Swindon in August of 1936 using the frames of condemned " Bulldog " 3439 combined with the cab , boiler and sundry fittings from similarly condemned " Duke " 3271 .
Mr . Collett's plans had been for his newly constructed engines to retain the original " Duke " nameplates but he was instructed by those at Paddington to name his " new " class after a number of noble living Earls and accordingly 3200 to 3212 actually were so named , but only for just a month or so as his superiors , in the face of objections from a number of the noble gentlemen concerned , were soon obliged to transfer the nameplates to the new "Castles " then emerging from Swindon .
Although " Earl " names had been allocated , and probably cast , for later " Dukedogs " numbered from 3213 they were not so fitted but accordingly went to other " Castles " instead.
3204 carried her " Earl of Dartmouth " plates just to August 1937 when they were transferred to " Castle " 5047 , which had from new been " Compton Castle " .
A stalwart of the Cambrian system , 9004 was withdrawn from Croes Newydd in June of 1960 .
