Peter Kerslake says "In March 1954 this engine was used for a short period of time on piloting duties over the South Devon banks between Plymouth and Newton Abbot, but the experiment was short lived and I suspect that the local footplate crews were not over impressed by the engine, with its exposed cab open to the Westcountry weather! Imagine bowling down Hemerdon or Dainton banks on this engine with a King right behind the tender!"
