3211 1937c Aberystwyth shed

3211 1937c Aberystwyth shed

GWR Dukedog 4-4-0 No 3211 at Aberystwyth shed in 1937 or early 1938. 3211 was constructed in March 1937.

Andrew Dyke provides the histoery of the shed: "This is pre-1938 before the shed improvements. The depot underwent two large improvements with the GWR in 1925 when the station was rebuilt and its platforms extended. These alterations included the extension of platforms 3 and 4 to 856ft and platform 5 (for Carmarthen services) to 650ft. Originally the turntable was sited directly behind the locomotive shed and an A&WCR brick-based water tank beyond that. The 1925 improvements also included standard single-tip coal stage, engine pits and better water facilities and the relocation of a new turntable (all shown in this picture). Again, in 1938, this shed was demolished and a new building was erected on the same site, which included a boiler house and workshops plus a lifting gantry. The turntable was eventually relocated to Machynlleth MPD in 1939 to be replaced by a reversing triangle. The turntable was then valued at £350 installation at Machynlleth cost a further £1890, whilst the Aberystwyth triangle cost £3085. The work was carried out in the Autumn. The GW turntable at Machynlleth survived until the end of steam. It was scrapped on site in 1967"

And he also adds

" According to Shedbash UK Oswestry 1938 - 1964 she was recorded on shed on Sunday the 15th of May 1938, along with 3216. Cross referencing with the Great Western Railway Archive No 3211 was denamed in June 1937, we can be assured the photograph is post of that date. At a guess looking at her appearance the photograph may have been taken in the mid to late summer 37." .
