9009 1955-07-17 Aberystwyth

An interesting locomotive combination here , with Aberystwyth's 7803 " Barcote Manor " , one of that Depot's early " Manors " , later to be joined by others of the class , seen with " Dukedog " 9009 in July of 1955 .
Ideally suited for working the Cambrian system , the little " Dukedogs " had been constructed at Swindon from 1936 using servicable boilers from condemned " Duke " class locomotives together with frames from withdrawn " Bulldog " class 4-4-0 's and they rarely strayed far from their regular haunts on the Cambrian Coast lines ,working as far north from Aberystwyth as Shrewsbury on express passenger rosters in their heyday.
As increasing service needs required the use of more poweful locomotives , however , the remaining " Dukedogs " were stored out of use in Swindon Work's Stock Shed in the mid ' fifties , but suitable alternative work for them was not readily available and an evaluation of 9023 for use on piloting duties over the South Devon banks proved unsuccessful so sadly all except one were disposed of thereafter.
