47276 1966-03-04 Writhlington Colliery

LMS 3F 0-6-0T No 47276 shunting at Writhlington Colliery on 4 March 1966.

Writhlington and the neighbouring Kilmersdon Colliery remained the last working in the whole North Somerset coalfield; the combined operation produced its highest-ever tonnage, 280,000 tons of saleable coal, in 1967. Both pits closed together in September 1973, after the conversion of Portishead Power Station from coal to oil removed their main remaining market.
