G&SWR 541 1923 Paisley

Glasgow & South Western Railway Whitelegg '540' class 4-6-4 Tank No. 541. Built By NBL of Glasgow in March 1922 and withdrawn in April 1935 as LMS No. 15401. If ever there were locomotives that deserved the praise of 'impressive-looking' it was these Robert Whitelegg 4-6-4 Tanks. The external design was designed to make a lasting impression and the unpainted, planished steel boiler set against the G&SWR green livery was the icing on the proverbial cake. Sadly, their high building, maintenance and running costs were not quite so impressive. Nonetheless, between rather too frequent downtime for hot boxes, they performed quite well but had a propensity to roll unexpectedly on any sections of track that were not perfect. p.s. Now THAT's what I call a HINGE on the smokebox door!
