3373 1900s Westbourne Park

3373 1900s Westbourne Park

Great Western Railway Dean 'Atbara' class 4-4-0 No. 3373 'Atbara'. Built at Swindon in April 1900, re-numbered to 4120 in December 1912 and withdrawn in September 1929.

Batches of similar Dean designed 4-4-0s were constantly being upgraded with modifications, the GWR allocated different class names to these developments such as the 'Badminton', 'Atbara' and 'Flower' classes. This circa 1901 scene at Westbourne Park MPD shows virtually new 'Atbara' itself with combined name and numberplate and the very ornate GWR monogram on her tender. Overlooking the shed is 'New Atlas Works', the premises of Henry Clayton & Company, makers of brick manufacturing machinery.

Restored from an original period 8"x10" print.
