90037 1960s March Twenty Foot Drain
Austerity 2-8-0 No.90037 with a train of 16T mineral wagons in the late 1950s at Twenty Foot River Goods Station approaching March Whitemoor yard. Built as WD No.77422 and originally sent to Eastfield in January 1944, it became LNER No.3037 in February 1947, BR No.63037 in May 1948 and finally No.90037 in October 1950. No.90037 was re-allocated from Colwick to Doncaster from February 1960 and in December 1965 it was transferred to Immingham. The Up loaded mineral train is unusually short for coal heading for Whitmoor hump yard, where the WD will drop off and the coal wagons will be sorted according to final destination, most of it no doubt heading for the capital. Prior to February 1960 the locomotive was at Colwick and by then the 'LMR takeover' was coming into effect which reduced coal flows to Whitemoor, sometimes resulting in shorter trains like that shown here. That wouldn't have been the case with Down empties, which tended to run in blocks of 60 or more, depending on the length limit (60 to Worksop, Doncaster and Colwick, 75 to Mansfield Concentration Depot).
