EMU No.140 at St Botolph’s in the mid-1970s. This was one of the BR Standard design GE Outer Suburban Four-Car units introduced in 1961 – originally known as the Southend Augmentation Stock but became more widely used over the years, Classed as 308/1 under TOPS by the mid-1980s all had been refurbished and repainted in blue/grey. The route indicator is no longer in use and has been set to four white blanks. St Botolph’s is on a short spur off the Colchester to Clacton line; trains left the main line to stop at its terminus platforms and then reversed out to continue their journey. It has since been renamed Colchester Town because it is nearer to the town centre than Colchester station on the Norwich main line.
