The opening day of Woohead Tunnel's new bore was Thursday 3rd June 1954 and the inaugural train is emerging at Woodhead Station This is BR Metro-Cammell Class 506 3-car EMU. This was formed of 52-seat Driving Motor Brake Third, Trailer Composite 24-1st class and 38-2nd class seats and 60-seat Driving Trailer Third. Nos. E59401, E59501 and E59601 respectively. Curiously, this was one of very few occasions that these 506 Class EMUs worked this route! They were all withdrawn by 1984.
