The 10.35 a.m. Newcastle - King's Cross express diverted from the ECML on this Sunday via Stockton. Within a few months this train and the Sunday 11.00 a.m. from Newcastle had both gone over to diesel haulage.

The diversion left the main line at Ferryhill south of Durham and ran on the old mineral lines (ex-Clarence Railway) to Norton West and then South via Redmarshall, then on to Stockton (where water would be taken if required) and re-joined the main line at Northallerton
