60024 1962-07-29 Norton Station
A Newcastle - London Sunday service booked to run on the coastal route as far as Northallerton. It had received a signal check hence the slammed shut regulator.
David Whittaker has the full story "60024 is heading the 10.25 a.m. Su. O Sunderland - King's Cross and certainly aroused much interest in the local area. A Haymarket A4, though not unknown, was a decided rarity. The full story only emerged years later. On the morning of the 28th Kingfisher worked 1F51, an up excursion into Kings Cross, origin unknown, which in itself was noteworthy. The engine was then sent north on 4S04 the afternoon King's Cross - Niddrie freight, steam hauled on summer Saturdays in 1962 as far as Newcastle. Heaton shed returned her south on the 10.25am Sunderland to London as seen here, which she worked to Grantham as per the diagram with this train, with A3 60049 working forward to Kings Cross. The 10.25 was often - though not exclusively - worked by the engine off the 4S04 down."
