A true Westcountry locomotive in its earlier years, 5059, "Earl St. Aldwyn" had been one of Newton Abbot's well kept " Castles " during the ' fifties before being transferred to Wolverhampton Stafford Road in 1958 as suitable work diminished on the West of England duties thanks to the invading Diesels .
Whilst at Newton Abbot 5059 was principally rostered on passenger workings to and from Bristol as well as working the " Torbay Express " between Kingswear and Paddington .
A later move to Shrewsbury in June , 1959 would account for 5059 being captured on film in this view at Chester, the engine being finally withdrawn in June of 1962.
