5660 1963 Ystad Mynach

5660 1963 Ystad Mynach

Pictured here at Ystrad Mynach , 5660 could , if I read my map correctly , be working either a duty through the valleys to Merthyr Tydfil or alternatively to Rhymney as this location here appears to be the junction for those services northwards from Caerphilly , with what looks like a further set ot trackwork just visible beneath the bridge on the right.
The recessed coal bunker with its empty lamp bracket shows up well in this image , a modification applied to the class which were so often worked bunker first back to their initial departure location down through the valleys , and their 0-6-2 wheel arrangement contributed well to their ability to do so .
Four of the class had been condemned the year before this view , but the rest continued in service until the last survivor , and one of the earliest , 5605 was withdrawn as late as 1966.

Lindsay Bryant confirms "These are the upper platforms at Ystrad Mynach on the connection from the Rhymney main line to Nelson and Llancaiach via Penallta Junction. The Rhymney valley platforms are below on the right. This is probably a service from Dowlais Cae Harris, several of which were extended from Nelson and Llancaiach to Ystrad Mynach to connect with Cardiff services"
