5644 1949 nr Treherbert
With a Cardiff-Treherbert train.
My old 1956 shedbook shows that " Taffy Tank " 5644 was allocated to Aberdare Motive Power Depot , but this earlier view has her working a lengthy passenger duty on to line to Treherbert , although that's not too far away .
The compact design of the class shows up well in this photograph , with the two cylinders tucked neatly between the frames , a feature taken from many of the earlier Welsh Railway locomotives acquired by the Great Western in 1923 and necessary to permit freight and passenger workings over the many Welsh valley lines with their restricted widths.
Lack of turning facilities at the termini of many of the Welsh branch lines often required these little tank engines to work back home down the branch bunker first , something which their 0-6-2 wheel arrangement made easier , and they proved to be popular with footplate crews , lasting in service until 1966
