14xx 1961-07-30 Swindon Works

A Sunday scene. These can only be 1431 reported as cut up 1961-08-12, 1454 & 1463 reported as 1961-09-09.

Peter Kerslake says "Swindon Works "Dump" didn't usually look as tidy as seen here in July of 1961 but there has obviously been a clear up of the mass of parts earlier removed by the cutters' torches during what was clearly a well arranged method of cutting up carried out these three little members of Mr. Collett's "1400" class with just their frames and wheels still intact.
First withdrawals of the class had begun during 1956 when three were condemned, leaving seventy two of the original series still in service allocated to no less than tweny five Depots throughout the Western Region network, whilst the final three, 1453, 1458 and 1472 all survived until 1964, being withdrawn at the end of the Chalford and Sharpness services in Gloucestershire."
