Propelling the 5-44pm to Berkeley Road. There is , of course , nothing in this tranquil scene here at Lydney Town , at the edge of the Forest of Dean , to indicate that just four months later than this view the service over the Severn Bridge and across the Severn to Sharpness and Berkeley Road on the Gloucestershire bank would be brought to a complete and dramatic end following the unfortunate events of the night of 25th . October that same year .Late that night , the barge " Wastdale H " , loaded with 350 tonnes of petrol from Avonmouth destined for Worcester and for some unknown reason lashed together with her sister barge the " Arkendale H " , hit the bridge and capsized .The " Arkendale H " , sailing from Swansea to Worcester with heavy fuel oil went on top of her sister in the collision , both exploded bringing down two spans of the bridge together with gas pipes running its length and five lost their lives in the ensuing fire .Unfortunate Lydney area rail passengers were thereafter forced to travel via Gloucester to reach their destinations as the bridge was never repaired , and the truncated service from Berkeley Road ending at Sharpness finished on 31st . October , 1964 , just four years later.
