Shunting the weekly goods; the line was finally closed for goods in September 1964.
Peter Kerslake says "Formerly an Oxford shedded locomotive 1420 was one of the few remaining members of her class still in service when this charming photograph was taken in July of 1964, the majority of the others still left being at Gloucester's Horton Road Depot working the Sharpness and Chalford services until both were ended on 31st October 1964. 1420 is at Presteign in mid Wales - there were only the three such freight turns on the line each week at his late date and a group of the local lads have turned out to witness the sight. 1420 only survived in BR service until the following November but happily was preserved on the Dart Valley Railway at Buckfastleigh."
