1466 1961 Swindon Works

1466 1961 Swindon Works

A remarkable pairing of two little " 1400 " class at Swindon , in the shape of 1466 and 1450 , both of which were to make it into preservation following withdrawal , but both with differing stories to tell .
Saved by the efforts of four young enthusiasts from Southall upon withdrawal in 1964 , 1466 has the distinction of heralding the start of today's Great Western Society , being the very first locomotive to form what is today a major part of the preservation scene , with its Didcot base the home of what is now an important and varied number of locomotives .
Sister engine seen here , 1450 , had spent most of its life at Oxford and Slough Depots before unusually being transferred to the Southern Region in 1962 to work the Lyme Regis branch from Axminster , following which it was condemned from the Southern Region's Exmouth Junction shed in the Spring of 1965 .
Purchased initially by the South Devon's Dart Valley Railway , 1450 is now privately owned and appears on a variety of Heritage Lines.
