1458 1964-10-31 Gloucester Central
On the Chalford service.
Peter Kerslake says "This wasn't the last day of the service through the " Golden Valley " from Gloucester Central to Chalford , as that was on Saturday , 31st. October , 1964.
Something special appears to be happening , however , as the crowd of enthusiasts have directed their attention and cameras across the tracks as 1458 sets off for Chalford , this engine , in company with sister engine 1472 and Pannier Tank 6412 doing the honours on that last day , with 1453 working the last services between Berkeley Road and Sharpness.
Following the end of those services the little engines were stored out of use at the former Midland shed at Barnwood just up the road from the Western's Horton Road depot.
From looking into my records afresh I can say that this WAS the last day of services on the Chaford line , namely , Saturday , 31st October , 1964 , and my earlier date was an error .
That would explain the number of enthusiasts and the fact that 1458 looks to have been specially well turned out by the cleaners still left at Horton Road Depot at that time !
This was the 3.08 p.m. from Gloucester to Chalford this day"
