1438 1956 Birmingham Snow Hill

1438 1956 Birmingham Snow Hill

No.1438 departs from Snow Hill past the North power box on its slender steel gantry which overhung the tracks on both sides. The “Dodger” was usually just a single auto-trailer, so probably this was a rush-hour service with the locomotive “sandwiched” between two trailers. The 70ft auto trailer nearest to the camera, a diagram L built in 1906, has had part of the beading plated over and is running on Collett 7ft bogies. It is likely to be either No.W44 or W45 which were both withdrawn in November 1957.
The man standing alongside the auto coach nearest the camera. Could he be the wheel tapper who always seemed to be present at Snow Hill in the 1950s
