1466 1961-06-08 Brampford Speke
On the Exe Valley line.
1466 had been allocated to 83A , which was Newton Abbot , in the mid 'fiftes , but appears to have gone " up the line " to 83C , the Western Region's Exeter Depot by the early 'sixties , but what a remarkable future awaited her when , following withdrawal and thanks to four young enthusiasts at Southall , she was saved from the breakers ' yards and secured for preservation , the first steam locomotive to form what is today's Great Western Society.
Moving initially down to Totnes , where the then fledgling Society were able to use a section of privately owned track , 1466 was later worked in light steam to Didcot , by then the Society's centre , in company with 6998 " Burton Agnes Hall " at the head of the Society's preserved rolling stock , on a wet , cold and dismal 2nd. December , 1967 , and she remains at Didcot today .
