1453 1961-03-01 Slough
With the hand painted replacement smokebox numberplate and a Pannier and Prairie for company.
1453 was destined to be one of the last surviving members of her class , seeing out her last days from Gloucester Horton Road Depot right up to 1964 when , in company with five or so other little " 1400's " her duties on the Berkeley Road to Sharpness branch and the " Golden Valley " line to Chalford from Gloucester all came to an end.
A number were thereafter stored at the nearby former Midland Region Gloucester Depot at Barnwood before being sent to the breakers' yards .
A popular and versatile class of locomotives , my records show that in early 1956 the remaining 72 of the initial class of 75 were based at a total of 25 Motive Power Depots , with Gloucester and Exeter having the most with eight each followed by Southall which had six on its books.
Three early withdrawals from this initial batch had been 1404 , 1425 and 1460 during late 1955 and early 1956.
