61635 1956-02-06 Boston
Ex-LNER Gresley 'B17/6' class 4-6-0 No. 61635 'Milton'. Built at Darlington in July 1931 as LNER No. 2835 and withdrawn in January 1959.
Making a powerful departure from Boston in Lincolnshire whilst working the 09.07 up Doncaster to Peterborough all stations via Lincoln. This was an interesting working via the original GNR loop line which followed the River Witham from Lincoln to Boston. Known locally at Boston as the ‘twenty to twelve’ (arrived 11.40 am), it was always one to look out for because of the motive power was usually a ‘footballer/Sandringham’ B17 or even sometimes a Claud.
The photo taken just south of the old London Road Hospital heading towards Spalding, close to where the photographer lived. Service finished around 1960/61. This fine photograph was taken by the late Les Perrin in February 1956.
Grade 1 listed Milton Hall built in the 1590s near Peterborough, is the largest private house in Cambridgeshire.
