61672 1954-04 Ipswich
Ancaster Road bridge, viewed from the platform at the west end of Ipswich station. 61672 looks rather folorn and neglected in this view at Ipswich , but it's 1954 now and displaying fitted freight lamps on her front buffer beam she , in company with others of her class , will have been displaced from many of their former express passenger duties by the newly introduced " Britannias " allocated to both Norwich and Stratford depots .
Perhaps not looking her best here , but the " B 17 " class were handsome engines , especially when well turned out in their lined green livery .
The first , then numbered 2800 , and named " Sandringham " , entered service in late November 1928 and by 1937 there were no fewer than seventry three of the class , the early ones bearing names of English Country Houses whilst a subsequent twenty five bore the names of football clubs , complete with a brass football replica as shown here.
Renowned for their work on the tightly timed " Cambridge Buffet Expresses " running between Cambridge and Kings Cross on the East Coast main line via Hitchin the class later saw service in and around Norwich and Ipswich and on the Liverpool Street rosters before the " Britannias " came on the scene relegating the " Sandringhams " to cross country duties between Manchester and East Anglia as well as appearing on the Harwich boat trains to and from Liverpool Street.
61604 " Elveden " was the first to be withdrawn in 1953 , the last to remain in service being 61668 " Bradford City " which lasted until September , 1960.
