61619 1950s March

61619 1950s March

61619 " Welbeck Abbey " was one of nine of her class to be found at March Motive Power Depot in the mid ' fifties , with Cambridge and Ipswich also both having nine on their respective books as well , although Stratford led the field at that time by having no less than twenty two " B2 's " and " B17's " allocated there whilst Colchester had fifteen and Yarmouth South Town had just six .
By 1st . January of 1960 that total of seventy had been reduced to just seventeen and the last survivor was 61668 " Bradford City " which lasted until August of 1960 .
Capable and well worked engines it was the newly introduced " Britannias " which sadly ended their reign of supremecy on the Norwich to Liverpool Street and Essex Coast duties when they appeared at Norwich and Stratford Depots from early 1951 , although they soldiered on in and around Cambridge for some years later .
