This was the reality of the London terminus, smoke and filth. Peter Kerslake adds "It would have been a very different scene at Livepool Street on the evening of Monday 27th September 1937 when City of London set off at 6.40p.m. on the inaugral "down" working of the "East Anglian" express bound for Norwich, the platforms crowded with spectators. In streamlined form, and in company with 2859 East Anglian both engines worked the new fast service until September 1939 and were then stored out of use until February 1940. The streamlining was removed from both engines at Gorton Works in 1951 when they were reclassified as class B17/6."
