There was a strange arrangement with a footpath and bridge across half the loco yard.
Ian Smith says "The footbridge over the loco yard wasn't 'strange' at all. It gave enginemen and shed staff safe access (which many of them used) from Devonshire Road into the shed without crossing any tracks at ground level. The four tracks they thus avoided fanned out to some seventeen tracks giving access to the lifting shop, the ash pits, the coaling tower, the turntable and the Tenison Road coal and goods yards so could be quite busy. The footbridge also served as an excellent vantage point for spotters (see little lad on the steps) with views of the shed yard, the north end of the station and, assuming parked carriages did not block the view, the goods avoiding lines.
